Do you ever scroll through social media and feel approximately 98 years old because you don’t understand anything that anyone is saying? You probably just haven’t spent enough time on Stan Twitter recently. Here are 12 stan culture words you should definitely know so that all those posts start to look a little less like gibberish. Trust, it’s easier than getting stuck reading an endless thread between feuding fandoms.

1. Stan Twitter

Had to start with the basics ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. According to Urban Dictionary, Stan Twitter is the dark underbelly of the internet where fans of literally everything live. It’s basically the most dramatic place in the whole wide world, and it’s filled with conspiracy theories, rumors, and unpopular opinions. It’s the best!

Example: I said Stan Twitter, DO YOU KNOW THIS SONG?

2. Stan

According to Fanlore, the word “stan” is a mix of the words “stalker” and “fan,” and whew! Ain’t that the truth. The term originally came from Eminem’s song “Stan,” which is about a dude who definitely leans harder into the stalker side of things, if ya feel me.

Example: I’ve been a hard-core Beyonce stan since Destiny’s Child, okay?

3. We/I stan

“Stan” is a verb, too, because a bish is versatile. According to Urban Dictionary, to stan something means to support or “stand up” for it. It can be used as a compliment too.

Example: Tyler C. from The Bachelorette has such a strong jawline, you could use it to slice a steak. You have to stan!

4. Here for

Think of this as an alternate to using stan as a verb. It’s typically used to describe a concept, person, couple, or TV show you support. People usually say this when something semi-controversial, funny, or new happens.

Example: I don’t know if the rumors are true, but if Emma Chamberlain and Ethan Dolan are dating, I’m here for it.

5. Skinny legend

Despite what “skinny legend” implies, this term has nothing to do with appearance. That would be horrible, and Stan Twitter is far too evolved for that. (Still don’t believe me? Ask Urban Dictionary.) Think of skinny legend as a way to describe a legend with a li’l more finesse.

Example: Lady Gaga killed it at the 2019 Met Gala. What a skinny legend.

6. Tea

Tea is not a fancy warm bev you sip. It’s all the juicy deets of the best piece of gossip you’ve ever heard. If you want the tea, you have to demand it be “spilled,” and if you have the tea, you are the one to “serve” it.

Example: What’s the tea on Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes? They’re dating, right?!

7. Locals

Basically you before reading this article. LOL, JK. According to Know Your Meme, “local” is a word used to describe people who aren’t down with current trends or social media behavior. It’s also the side of Twitter that hasn’t dipped into the stan side yet.

Example: SMH, these locals on my timeline don’t even know half the people in this Taylor Swift music video.

8. Mutuals

Mutuals are the product of classic social media etiquette! These are people you Follow who Follow you back, which creates a space to bond over things you both stan.

Example: My mutuals really know the best GoT theories.

9. Shade

Ever described someone as shady? This is basically the noun version of that. Shade is thrown, and it’s basically a diss but a little bit less intense.

Example: Sorry, did RG just call Jimin out for being late again? The shade of it all!

10. Snack

Snack is a way to describe someone super hot. So hot that you could just pop them in your pocket like a granola bar and snack on them later when you’re hungry. Too far?

Example: Joe Keery is lookin’ like a snack in this new Stranger Things season.

11. Snatched

Similarly, “snatched” is also used to describe someone who’s looking absolutely unreal. But unlike snack, snatched is used as an adjective.

Example: Lana Condor is fully snatched in her Instagram Story right now.

12. Canceled

Think of the word as you usually use it. Now apply it to a social setting, directed toward a person or phenomenon you no longer desire to keep up with.

Example: Luke P. totally slut-shamed Hannah B. on the sneak peek for next week’s Bachelorette episode. He’s canceled.
