Hormones That Impact A Woman's Weight And Health

There are around 50 different hormones in the human body. Each of them plays its own role. However, there are certain hormones that are important for maintaining your health and optimum body weight.

Estrogen

"During Menopause, most of the women tend to gain weight abruptly. This is because of the hormone estrogen. You might know that the levels of all the hormones plummet during this time, including estrogen and progesterone. However, if progesterone decreases more than estrogen, it still causes dominance of estrogen, thereby resulting in weight gain," says Dr Purnima Srivastava, a gynaecologist.

Dr Srivastava recommends eating lots of vegetables as the fibre in these vegetables help remove the extra estrogen. However, it is advisable to increase the intake of fibre gradually to avoid any sort of digestion issues.

Ghrelin

Commonly known as the 'Hunger Hormone" ghrelin tells you when you are hungry. As soon as your stomach becomes empty, it signals you. "The problem arises when ghrelin starts acting abnormally. It has been seen that ghrelin is produced in a very less amount in obese people than in healthy ones. This results in a lack of want for food and lack of energy too. As a result, you become resistant to doing physical activities. This results in difficulty in weight loss," says Dr Chhabra.

Dr Chhabra suggests maintaining a healthy lifestyle in order to tackle uncontrolled and abnormal ghrelin formation. Another very important aspect is to maintain a proper sleep schedule.

Cortisol

This hormone analyses and is responsible for your body's response to stressful conditions. "Although your body needs cortisol to fight with stressful situations, an excess of cortisol might increase a risk of stroke and hence heart attack. In addition to this, an excess of cortisol might also result in excess fat getting collected around internal organs," says Cardiologist Poonam Srivastava.

Dr Poonam recommends meditation as an option to modify your body's response towards stress. Having proper sleep schedules also play an important role in reducing stress.

Insulin

Created by your pancreas, Insulin helps regulate sugar in the blood. When you keep eating sugary foods in excess, you make your insulin work overtime and the extra sugar is stored in the form of fat. This is the reason why an excess of sugary food in your diet is linked with gaining weight.

Dr Nidhi suggests enough protein in every meal in order to lose weight. In addition to this, proper exercise and small meals is a key to maintaining a healthy body.

Getting your hormone level tested if you're struggling with health issues and weight problems even after maintaining a proper diet and exercising is advisable.
