When it comes to doing this, experts in the fitness industry have insisted that it’s your diet which is the most important consideration.

Personal trainer and Results with Lucy co-founder Cecilia Harris exclusively told Express.co.uk: “To lose body fat in general, in any part of your body, it’s about dieting.

“It’s about creating a calorie deficit.”

The NHS recommends eating a healthy, balanced diet and taking part in exercise regularly if you want to lose weight.

And, Cecilia said, it’s once you’ve burned the excess body fat, that it may be possible to get the appearance of a so-called six-pack.

When training the abs, many people rush to the floor area in order to do sit ups and crunches.

The personal trainer said: “You obviously need to do quite a lot of exercises, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be just crunches and sit ups.

“In fact, the less you do of those the better.”

This may come as surprising to some. Why is Cecilia not a fan?

She explained: “Crunches and sit ups are definitely one of the classics that most of us associate with getting a flat tummy and six-pack abs, but really, what you are doing is constantly just flexing your spine.”

While the activity will see you use the muscles you want to work on, Cecilia said there were alternative moves which would give you “a really strong core”.

So, what exercises would be more effective?

In order to get results, Cecilia suggested holding positions and plank positions.

She added: “And actually, body weight training exercises are going to make your core muscles, your abdominal muscles, work harder and therefore be strong.”

“Planking positions are extremely important for a nice strong core and yes if you are lean enough, you will see the appearance of abdominals,” Cecilia continued.

She also suggested trying out some dynamic planks - which means moving and circling your legs - as well as the high plank or elbow plank.

Pull-ups are another move which comes recommended by the personal trainer.

“Although it’s a very difficult exercise, pull-ups are extremely amazing exercise for gaining strong abdominals and creating that six-pack position,” Cecilia added.
