This article is more than 2 years old.

Hitachi made several announcements in its hybrid cloud storage offerings including the company’s midrange VSP E590 and E790 as well as large storage VSP 5000 products.  Micron’s Crucial business unit, providing memory and storage for consumer applications celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Hitachi Vantara has expanded it hybrid cloud infrastructure.  The company recently outlined steps it is taking to deliver a distributed hybrid cloud data fabric.  These include combining its hybrid cloud infrastructure solutions with the software defined Hitachi Virtual Storage Software for block, virtualized across distributed environments form the edge to the cloud.

Hitachi introduced new versions of its VSP E590 and E790 storage solutions for small and midsized enterprise clients (see image below).  The company says that it’s hybrid storage options give clients the flexibility to consolidate diverse workloads in a single midrange platform. Integrations with leading cloud services platforms can help clients lay the foundation for extending data fabrics to the cloud. Hitachi says that moving forward these arrays will have common data services and virtualization from our software defined and cloud hosted solutions.

In addition to economical all-NVMe storage, clients can now choose all-NVMe SSDs, all-SAS HDDsor a combination of the two. The addition of SAS expansion to VSP E590 and E790 addresses low latency requirements for applications and affordability for small and midsized enterprise clients, ensuring clients never compromise performance while making use of high capacity, low-cost media for data retention.

Hitachi Vantara also announced updates to its VSP 5000 Series data platform for clients with large data requirements.    The VSP5600 is shown below.

The company says that new VSP 5600 model once again smash records with 33 million IOPS and as low as 39 microseconds of latency. These capabilities accelerate application response and increase datacenter consolidation opportunities. These arrays are also intelligent, with integrated real-time observability across the infrastructure stack with automated anomaly detection and root cause analysis.

The VSP 5000 series storage models feature the same modern application development integrations as the new E-Series models to extend the data fabric from the edge to the core and to the cloud.  Hitachi says that its Modern Storage Assurance provides a non-disruptive upgrade path to the next generation of technology.  This can be purchased with a new system or is included in the EverFlex as-a-service offering that allows clients to consumer hardware, software and service through a pay-per-use model.  The company also offered new object storage software and an AI powered Hitachi Ops Center for data management.

Crucial Technology, the consumer products arm of Micron announced that 2021 is its 25th anniversary.  The image below is from an ad for Crucial’s memory modules from 1996.  In 1996 Crucial was launched at Micron’s headquarters in Boise, Idaho with seven team members.

Over the 25 years of Crucial’s existence it has provided a number of products, including its first SSD with a SATA II interface, offered in 2008.  In 2018 Crucial introduced its P1 SSD with its first NVMe interface.  The company says that they have more than 47 M users from 230+ countries every year, Crucial products are sold through over 5,000 retailers and over 1M computers have been upgraded using the company’s compatibility tools.  Crucial says that they have upgrades for more than 175,00 computers and motherboards.

During the pandemic, Crucial saw accelerated upgrades from its customers.  They also said that SSD average capacity is moving from 256GB to 500GB and that they expect this will move quickly to 1 TB.  On DRAM they expect to transition to DDR5 for the near-term consumer market.  It will be interesting to see what the next 25 years will bring.
