Stocks discussed: (NasdaqGS:FB) (NYSE:V)

In a Q3 2019 earnings call published yesterday, Visa (NYSE:V) revealed that it has not yet officially joined as a partner with Facebook (NasdaqGS:FB) in the latter’s Libra project. Alfred F. Kelly Jr., Visa’s chairman and CEO, said:

“…the first thing I'd say I think it's important to understand the facts here and not any of us get out ahead of ourselves. So we have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to join Libra. We're one of – I think it's 27 companies that have expressed that interest. So no one has yet officially joined.

We're in discussions and our ultimate decision to join will be determined by a number of factors, including
obviously the ability of the association to satisfy all the requisite regulatory requirements.”

Also yesterday, it was revealed that the Libra Association has yet to respond to an information request from the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC). An excerpt from the press release reads:

The FDPIC stated in his letter that as he had not received any indication on what personal data may be processed, the Libra Association should inform him of the current status of the project so that he could assess the extent to which his advisory competences and supervisory powers would apply.

The U.S. Senate Banking Committee has announced a full hearing on cryptocurrency regulation to be held on Tuesday, July 30. Titled Examining Regulatory Frameworks for Digital Currencies and Blockchain, the hearing’s witnesses include: Jeremy Allaire, Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Circle, on behalf of The Blockchain Association; Rebecca M. Nelson, Specialist in International Trade and Finance, Congressional Research Service; and Mehrsa Baradaran, Professor of Law, University of California, Irvine School of Law.

Online tech retailer Newegg has expanded its acceptance of Bitcoin (BTC) as a payment form in 73 new countries. This is facilitated through the company’s partnership with crypto payments processor BitPay, which began in 2014. Anthony Chow, Newegg President Global Sales, commented:

“Five years ago, we were one of the first major online shopping destinations to accept Bitcoin, and our early-adopter customers were quick to embrace this new payment option. Broadening the ability to pay with Bitcoin to the majority of our global network underscores our commitment to bring innovation to the online shopping experience, and answers customers’ growing preference for our Bitcoin payment option.”
